Virginia Tech Employees' Spouse
and Dependent Scholarship Fund
History and Background (1996-1999)
April 30, 1996 College of Agriculture and Life Sciences Staff Association (CALSSA) unanimously passed the resolution to investigate the possibility of Virginia Tech offering tuition fee waivers for staff dependents and spouses. 
June 1996 CALSSA presented the proposal to the Commission on ClassifiedStaff Affairs (CCSA).
August 1996 Chair of CCSA appointed a task force to study the feasibility of Virginia Tech offering tuition fee waivers for employee dependents and spouses.
November 1996  Commission on Faculty Affairs, Commission on Administrative and Professional Faculty Affairs, and Benefits Committee each endorsed the initiative to provide this benefit.
January 24, 1997  Presented and discussed proposal with University Administration.
May 28, 1997 University Administration was unable to support the proposal at this time.
August 24, 1997 Discussed status of the proposl at Employee Benefits Committee meeting.
November 18, 1997  Faculty Senate endorsed proposal.
February 23, 1998 Task Force met with Jim Claus, Dan Eversole, Terry Lawrence & Ben Poe - discussed working at faculty level in CALS.
October 1998 Office for University Development makes a general presentation to the Commission on Classified Staff Affairs about giving opportunities. Ad hoc committee formed to develop plan for scholarship.
December 9, 1998 First meeting of ad hoc Scholarship Committee.
December 1998 Survey inquiring about support for a scholarship program sent to CALS employees - strong positive response returned.
Jan/Feb 1999 All partners are involved in developing the proposal for a scholarship program supported by tax-deductable donations to the Virginia Tech Foundation.
March 1999 Final proposal presented to the Commission on Classified Staff Affairs 
Formal approval moves program toward awarding scholarships for Fall 2000.

In the past, the Employee's Spouse and Dependent Scholarship Program has assisted families of Virginia Tech employees by supporting their dependents and spouses as students at the university. The scholarship program began in 2000 and as of 2006 forty-eight scholarships have been awarded.
